Our Rich Heritage

With a deep historical legacy, the Murray River region occupies a prominent role in the early colonization of Western Australia. In 1830, Thomas Peel initiated a settlement at the river's mouth, setting the stage for the burgeoning colony. As the young colony was established, industry and indigenous culture collided. Our heritage weaves a compelling tale of entrepreneurial pioneers, dark stories and ongoing cultural reconciliation.

The Serpentine River shapes the landscape as it slithers its way down from high up in the Darling Ranges, down the Scarp, flood plains, pools, back waters and lakes, and disappears into the Peel Inlet. Water courses through the veins of our region. In the past it has fueled industry and today is the lifeblood of our aquatic playground.
