River Days in Dwellingup

Paddle the Murray

Trade downhill trails for glassy water, and hiking boots for a paddle gently slipping into the Murray River. Kayaking and canoeing in Lane Poole Reserve in the summer months is all about slowing down, drifting between jarrah-lined banks and letting the forest do the talking.

With long, calm stretches of river weaving through the reserve, the Murray River is perfectly suited to beginners, families and anyone craving a peaceful escape on the water.

WHERE TO LAUNCH

Dwaarlindjirraap Day Use Area

Dwaarlindjirraap Day Use Area is the most popular starting point, and for good reason. With barbecues, picnic tables and the striking suspension bridge stretching across the Murray, it’s far more than a place to launch. It’s somewhere to linger. Stairs lead directly to the water, making launching easy, while the gentle current sets the tone for a relaxed paddle downstream. Towering jarrah and marri trees lean over the river’s edge, their reflections rippling across the surface.

If you’re planning to stay a little longer, Baden Powell Campground offers the best access for overnight adventures.

Chuditch Picnic Area

For a quieter entry point, Chuditch Picnic Area feels wonderfully tucked away. In Summer, the water is calm and inviting, ideal for short out-and-back paddles or drifting downstream to explore hidden bends and shady picnic spots.

During the winter months, seasonal rapids form along this stretch, creating faster-flowing sections of water. For a little extra thrill, Dwellingup Adventures offers a seasonal Fast Water Rafting self-guided experience.

Island Pool

If you're on the Eastern side of the River, head to Island Pool to launch your watercraft. After your paddle, take the Island Pool Walk Trail for a one-hour loop through scenic jarrah forests, with stunning views of the valley below.

For longer-distance paddles, start at Yarragil Campground. Recently upgraded access includes stairs leading directly to the water, making launching smooth and simple. From here, you can follow the Murray River downstream toward Dwaarlindjirraap and on to Nanga Bridge, enjoying the views along the way. Refer to the full paddle trail to plan your journey.
